This is the question behind almost every date night booking we see, so let us answer it plainly: yes, it works, and the non-golfer usually has the better time. Here is why.
Loaner clubs are free, so there is nothing to buy or borrow. Sneakers and whatever you were going to wear to dinner are fine. During staffed hours our team sets the bay up, picks a course, and walks a first-timer through the grip and the first few swings, which takes about five minutes. The overhead Uneekor XO2 cameras do the rest. Every shot, however it comes off the club, gets tracked and shown on the screen as a ball flight, and even a 40-yard topped shot looks better rolling down a fairway in 4K than it ever would at a driving range.
The software also has settings built for exactly this situation. Mulligans let you retake a bad shot. Gimmes pick up short putts. You can play from the forward tees, or set the non-golfer up on a shorter set of tees than yours on the same hole. One honest note. The golfer in the couple will be tempted to coach. Resist it for the first half hour. Let the screen do the teaching, celebrate the good ones, and save the grip lesson for a second date.
Four formats that keep both of you playing
An 18-hole stroke play round is the wrong format for a first date night. It is long, the scores are lopsided, and the non-golfer spends most of it hitting again. These four are better. Mix and match them across the booking.
Closest to the pin
The simplest game in golf and the best leveller. Pick a par 3, take turns hitting to the green, and the ball that finishes nearest the hole wins the point. Play to five. The beauty is that a 140-yard shot that lands 20 feet from the flag beats a 200-yard shot into the water, so the beginner is in every point. Both of you hit, you pick the better ball, and both of you hit again from there. Driver, five swings each, longest carry wins. Pure entertainment, and the launch monitor puts a carry distance on every ball so there is no arguing. Fair warning: a beginner who makes one clean contact will talk about it for a month.
Planning the night: when to book and what it costs
Two hours is the right first booking. One hour is roughly nine holes for two people and goes by quickly once you have warmed up; two hours gives you room for a couple of formats, a drink, and dinner in the bay. Rates are per bay, per hour, and the full grid is on the play and pricing page. The short version:
- Monday to Thursday before 4 PM or after 10 PM: $25 an hour for an open bay, $35 for a private bay.
- Monday to Thursday, 4 to 10 PM: $35 an hour open, $45 private.
- Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all day: $45 an hour open, $55 private.
For a date night, book a private bay if one is open. It is the same simulator and the same screen with a door, which means nobody wanders past mid-swing and the beginner never feels watched. The $10 difference on a two-hour booking is the best money you will spend all night.
If you want beer or wine, book inside staffed hours: Monday to Thursday 10 AM to 10 PM, Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 11 PM, Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM. A Thursday at 7 PM is the sweet spot for most couples, with a lower rate than the weekend and the whole lounge quieter. If a late night is more your style, the bays are open around the clock for anyone who has done the two-minute setup at the front desk, so a Friday date can run past midnight with the building to yourselves. The bar is closed after hours, but the golf is not.

A sample two-hour date night, minute by minute
You do not need a plan, but if you like one, this is the shape of a good night.

15 to 45 minutes: closest to the pin, first to five. Pick a pretty par 3 and start the rivalry. Loser buys the first round.
45 to 95 minutes: nine holes of scramble. Pebble Beach front nine is the classic choice. Eat dinner as you go; the bay has its own seating for exactly this.
95 to 115 minutes: long drive, best of five. Finish with the driver. Photograph the leaderboard for evidence.

Making it a regular thing
